CURYJ Presents: The Dream Beyond Bars Mural Revealing Block Party

Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice (CURYJ) invites you to attend The Dream Beyond Bars Mural Revealing Block Party! A celebration for the community we love, and organized by the young people we serve.

But this is a block party and we plan on turning-up! We wouldn't be CURYJ if we didn't hold it down with lowrider cars, tacos, Mexican dancers, Native American drumming, face painting, tabling, and a popping DJ! However, keep it clean folks, no drugs or alcohol.

The mural has been in the works since CURYJ had to postpone our annual Reclaiming Cinco de Mayo this year. The new Aztlán Beautification Movement (ABM) mural on 33rd Ave and Foothill Blvd will represent the true meaning of Cinco de Mayo - The Battle of Puebla- and how a ragtag group of Mexican militia took on the high-powered French Army only to do the unthinkable and reclaim their land.

For generations we have overcome hardships throughout our history and culture by taking our ancestors lessons and dismantling systems in our communities, like the work being done through our campaign to end youth incarceration so that young people can #DreamingBeyondBars.

The June 15th mural unveiling is meant to be a gift to the East Oakland community CURYJ resides in, and for the young people we call family. These are the youth that are fighting along side us to one day #CloseYouthPrisons and #BuildYouthLeaders, and they wouldn't be able to do that unless they understood why we were fighting. CURYJ sees these murals as a means to uplift our folks, and an opportunity to teach young people about the battles we have faced as black and brown folks.

So bring the family, bring a friend, and come celebrate with CURYJ!
