Yin Yoga focuses on stretching and nourishing the bodies connective tissues - ligaments, joints, bones and our deep fascia system to release chronically held tension and increase range of motion. Yin Yoga draws upon the five elements of earth, metal, water, wood and fire and the principles of yin and yang used in Chinese medicine. Yin and yang are opposites, one cannot exist without the other. Yin and yang are the vibration of the universe, the energy within all life. Yin yoga works the six major meridians of Chinese medicine from the navel to the knees and strengthens the body’s immune system. The body’s response to yin yoga can be felt the next time you practice a yang style of yoga. The body opens deeper and with greater ease. These practices are tied together, yin within yang, yang within yin supporting and balancing our natural state.
The Yin postures are practiced on the floor and held for 3 to 5 minutes using props to support the poses and the body. Yin yoga teaches us how to really listen to the body, we do not force the body into a pose, we gradually move as the body tells us its ready to release. Yin brings long periods of time in uncomfortable positions which then asks us to accept what is in that moment.
Yin practice enables you to connect the mind with the breath, to release more deeply into the body and tap into your deepest energy center.
Calming and balancing the mind and body, increases mobility in the body, especially the joints and hips, lowers stress and anxiety levels allowing deep relaxation in the body, prepares the body to sit longer for meditations, lubricates the joints, brings more flexibility to the joints and connective tissues.
Yin yoga is for everyone, both new and established yogis.
