Visualization of Data to Support Clinician and Patient Decision Making

The proliferation of electronic medical records over the past few years has made extensive amounts of data available to clinicians and patients. Now that we have this data, what do we do with it? One of the ways to make the data useful is to visualize it in a way that it can be better understood in a way that supports decision-making by clinicians, patients, and other caregivers.

Yixuan (Janice) Zhang is part of a team that has developed a tool that visualizes type 1 diabetes data to support decision-making. The visualization currently supports clinician decisions, but it is being expanded to include patient decisions. In this presentation, Janice will describe how the data are extracted and visualized to support the needs of the clinicians and patients.

Janice has a unique background with degrees in Biological Sciences and Human-Computer Interaction and with an interest in how to appropriately and effectively apply technologies learned from both disciplines in helping people improve the quality of their lives. She started the journey to do this by earning an MS in Health Informatics, and she’s now working toward a Ph.D. in Personal Health Informatics.
