Richard Tostenson graduated with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from Indiana University School of Music. Richard is an active soloist with repertoire ranging from the Baroque to the 21st century. He has recently performed Messiaen’s Vingt regards sur l’enfant-Jesus at Basilica of Saint Mary and selections from Liszt’s Annees de Pelerinage at The Minneapolis Institute of Art. He has also recently had solo performances with Minneapolis Music Company, The Baroque Room, A Center for the Arts, and The Museum of Russian Art.

In addition to his performing career, Richard is on the piano faculty at MacPhail Center for Music where he is the MacPhail Keyboard Department Specialist, coordinator for the MacPhail Advanced Piano Camp, a participating faculty member of the MacPhail Young Artist for Piano Program, and the 2017-2018 recipient of the James E. Ericksen Artist Grant. Richard has also been a visiting professor of piano at Gustavus Adolphus College.


Richard’s students have won prestigious awards including the MacPhail Concerto and Aria competition, Saint Paul Piano Teachers Association Concerto Competition, Minneapolis Music Teachers Forum Mozart Piano Concerto Competition, Chicago International Amateur Piano Competition, and the opportunity to participate in the International Junior e-piano competition.  Many of Richard’s students have been accepted into top music schools.
